During October 1998 April 1999, a comparative study using tropicamide 1% arasymphatolytic,.) and phenylephrine 10% (symphatolytic) eye drops has been performed in 30 diabetic patients and 20 non diabetic patients. One drop of tropicamide 1% is given to the right and left eye of 15 diabetic patients and 10 non diabetic, and the rest received one drop of phenvlephrine 10%. Diameter of pupil was measured before treatment and in 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes after treatment.
It is found that pupil reaction of diabetic patients are slower than non diabetic patients (especially in tropicamide group), and this condition become manifest after 5 years suffering from diabetes mellitus. Beside that, phenylephrine 10% eye drop showed a better pupil reaction than tropicamide 1% parasymphatic alteration more prominent than symphatic alteration. Prom this recent study, it is assumed in diabetic patients that parasymphalic alteration more prominent than symphatetic alteration
