ANALISIS FAKTOR RISIKO COASTAL GOITER
Abdul Razak Thaha, Djunaidi M. Dachlan dan Nurhaedar Jafar
Until recently, risk factors related to coastal goiter in Maluku are still inconclusive. This study was carried out to identify the predominant risk factors of IDD in Maluku. The study was conducted in two group of islands (“Gugus Pulau”) with highest prevalence and two “Gugus Pulau” non-endemic areas. Study subjects were schoolchildren and randomly chosen from those who participated in a mapping study of IDD prevalence in 1996 consist of 117 and 200 for case and control groups respectively.
Consumption of iodine and thiocyanat sources, concentrations of iodine in water sources and soil, urinary iodine and thiocyanate excretion were measured. Iodine concentrations in salts were tested and pedigree analysis was performed.
There were no significant differences of iodine and thiocyanate intakes between case and control groups. However there were significant differences between two groups for UIE (p<0.1) and UTE (p<0.05). Both UIE and UTE were higher in control group compared to those in case group. Iodine concentration of water in endemic areas was not significantly different from non-endemic areas (p=0.428) but the iodine concentration of soil was significant (p=0.054). There was not significant difference of genetic factor between two groups. In addition, this study showed that all household studied used non iodized salt.
